One of the highlights of my every Saturday morning is going to the farmer's market in Hartford. What a treat to buy fresh produce and other goodies from these people who take such pride in selling good, nutritious food. What I absolutely do not appreciate, however, is the fact that people bring their dogs to a place where food is sold out in the open. Dogs shed hair, especially in the hot summer months, and guess what else? I have seen dogs defecate right next to food stands. Even if it is picked up, there are still flies that gather, and the flies certainly get on the food! I know there is an ordinance 8.07 relating to domestic dogs in parks (Jordan Park is right next door), but we absolutely need an ordinance prohibiting dogs from public farmer's markets with a large sign so everyone can see it. After all, why in the world would anyone bring their dog to a farmer's market? What benefit is it to the dog? Really people?? How about a little consideration for those of us who want to buy fresh, in season foods without the thought of contamination from nearby animals. By the way, West Bend has adopted an ordinance prohibiting dogs for this very reason. A response would be appreciated.
